PRP for Joint Pain FAQ
What is Platelet Rich Plasma therapy?
Blood platelets are most commonly thought of as blood clotting agents, however platelets also contain a huge number of important proteins called “growth factors.” These proteins promote healing and tissue recovery. PRP injection therapy utilizes a highly concentrated form of blood plasma that is rich in platelets as a healing agent – the PRP is injected directly into the affected joint, at the location of the injury or pain. Injections may be guided by ultrasound imaging to ensure precise application.
How is PRP made?
Platelet Rich Plasma is made from your own blood. Blood is drawn from a vein and the platelets are separated out using a centrifuge. This concentrated platelet-rich liquid is then used for your PRP treatment.
Is PRP therapy safe and does it work?
PRP for joint pain is a well-studied and very safe treatment, a much safer alternative to invasive surgery or powerful pain medications. Because PRP is made from your own blood, there is no risk of rejection or allergic reaction. Side effects are what you expect from a minor injection procedure: short term slight bruising, numbness or soreness at the injection site.
