Arthritis FAQ

What is arthritis?

Arthritis is used to describe a wide range of rheumatic diseases and conditions that affect the joints and surrounding connective tissues, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Symptoms of arthritis include pain and stiffness around affected joints, fatigue, joint inflammation and swelling; these arthritis symptoms may come and go, or persist over time.

Who gets arthritis?

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates more than 50 million Americans each year suffer from one or more forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the most prevalent, with more than 21 million sufferers. Arthritis symptoms most often develop between the ages of 40 to 50 and women are three times more likely than men to be affected.

What are the warning signs of arthritis?

Joint stiffness, pain or inflammation that persists longer than two weeks or occurs without injury may be early signs of arthritis. Increasing pain during completion of common tasks – opening a jar, climbing stairs, etc. – is also an indicator. A qualified doctor can provide a complete diagnosis.

What goes into an accurate arthritis diagnosis?

The North Star Med Pain & Spine Center team can provide the full medical services recommended for arthritis diagnosis, including detailed medical history of current and past symptoms, physical exam, and x-rays and blood work, if necessary.
